For years nature photographers such as I have been photographing all sorts of birds as fine art. Eagles, Cranes, Herons, Egrets etc. About two and a half years ago a friend asked me if I had any really good shots of Mallards. I had a number of Mallard shots but none I would consider for fine art printing - thus was born The Mallard Project. I set out to photograph the Mallard as fine art, and no subject that I have ever photographed proved to be as dificult . . . First, I went looking for great photo locations for Mallards at all times of the year. In my quest I've been from the "Ghost River" in Tennessee to Dulac, Louisianna - from Eagles Nest to Reelfoot to the Land Between the Lakes, from Wapanocca to Cache River to The White River and The Black River. I've been on rivers, lakes, ponds, hardwood flats, sloughs, "suck holes" and backbrush. I've photographed from Memphis to New Orleans (Bayou Sauvagé) to the Atchafalaya Basin to Cameron Parish to St. Cathrine's NWR at Natchez to Stuttgart, Clarendon and back to Memphis many many times. In a bit less than three years and thousands of images, I have, at this time, about six to eight images I am printing as Fine Art Mallard prints. When I finish, I expect to have no more than twelve to perhaps sixteen fine art prints of Mallards to produce as a very limited edition portfolio. On the project I work with Canon digital equipment and very long Canon professional telephoto lenses. An "Old Fashion" photographer I use very minimal computer processing converting my RAW image files. I print my images on Moab 190 and 300 Natural Fine Art paper using pigment base inks on Epson printers which are numbered signed and embossed. i should note that the sole source of funding for the project is the sale of prints so If you like my work please tell your friends about this series of prints of Mallards at www.gophototek.com.
