D.
McNeel Jacobs II My first camera was a red case fold-out model found in my grandmothers cedar chest, which I Air Shot because I had no film. One my earliest images (I still have the print) is of a pigeon in flight taken with a Kodak camera. My serious study and work in photography began in the late sixties when I traveled and then moved west. Living in Denver I extensively photographed in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and New Mexico with 35 mm, 21/4 x 21/4 medium format, 4 x 5 and 8 x 10 field cameras . I studied with Adams and used and later taught the Zone System. During this time I photographed many now familiar images in Yellowstone, The Tetons and Jackson Hole area, The "Bells" at Maroon, Ouray, Mesa Verde, Bosque del Apache, the great "Dunes" of Colorado and New Mexico, Taos Pubelo and many evenings in the Chama valley outside Hernandez, New Mexico with untold stops in the valleys and high country Moving back to Memphis I opened a commercial studio and teaching facility. During this time I worked with numerous Fortune 500 clients; and as a stringer for Reuters and other news agencies, I covered the deaths of Martin Luther King and Elvis. My life and my work took a detour on August 17, 1978 when I was seriously injured while on the job covering the second series of police and fire strikes in Memphis. During the long healing process, I moved more into publishing and then into the computer field (Macintosh), where I was introduced to a new software program, PHOTOSHOP. I migrated back toward professional photography about ten or twelve years ago. An "old school" photographer (I consider visualization of all aspects of the image, exposure and the finished print paramount.), I have refocused these concepts and my work coinciding with the advances in digital photography. As a freelance professional photographer, I primarily shoot natural science images with some special emphasis on waterfowl, birds and flowers. I am involved with the "Fowl Shots" multi year Mallard Project. I use Macintosh computer equipment. I shoot with Canon digital cameras and Canon L series lenses and print on Epson printers. |
